Title: Spy
Pairing: none
Rating: G
Summary: Halbarad catches one of the Shire folk spying.
Aragorn, who had been smoking pipeweed in a peaceful clearing just outside the Shire, startled when his kinsman pushed a captured halfling into the campfire’s light.
“What is this, Halbarad?”
The halfling’s huge eyes glittered with fear, and he seemed paralyzed like a newly captured rabbit.
“I found him spying on our camp.”
Aragorn turned a stern gaze to the halfling. “Is this true? Were you spying?”
The halfling shook his head.
“What were you doing then?”
The halfling looked over his shoulder, longingly toward the freedom of the woods.
“Speak!” Aragorn said, and the halfling cringed.
“No, no, sir,” the halfling whispered.
Aragorn’s voice grew gentler. “What were you doing then, lad?” For he could see that the frightened halfling with the bright blue eyes was still just a lad and he’d likely never seen Men before. “Release him, Halbarad.”
The halfling swallowed. He looked from side to side. Then with the speed of a gazelle, he dashed into the dark woods. Halbarad moved to chase him, but Aragorn lifted his hand.
“Nay, let him go. He’s just a frightened lad.”
“Honest Shirefolk don’t often venture this far,” Halbarad said with suspicion, clutching the hilt of his sword. “He could be working for someone unsavory.”
“Ah,” Aragorn said with a smile, “but there are some that are more adventurous than others.”
