Summary: Sam takes hope in the song of hobbits

After the ship had twinkled into the horizon taking with it the only one to whom Sam had ever given his heart, Sam had looked forward, speaking not a word to Merry and Pippin and trying not to contemplate the long, gray days without him. He could not face Bag End, knowing it was empty of its soul and light. Even now he understood that he would face years of always seeing Frodo in the shadows, in crowds, a glimpse here and there where Sam’s heart would jump with joy and then sink when he remembered.

Just ahead, Merry and Pippin broke into cheerful song.

No, don’t, Sam’s heart begged. There shall be no more song with him gone.

Frodo’s voice had always been the best.

The longer the two younger hobbits sang, feeding off each other with increasing foolishness and laughter, the more Sam’s heart lifted. This was what Frodo had sacrificed his own life for, so that hobbit song and laughter could always be heard in the Shire. By the end of the day, Sam had joined his friends in song.
