This snippet of TLTW takes place when Ellohir is four.

“Show me again!” Ellohir giggled. He sat cross-legged, clutching his nightshirt that bunched around his knees as he rocked back and forth inside his boat-shaped bed. “Show me again where I came from!”
Frodo smiled and lifted his shirt, revealing a thin white mark in his lower abdomen. Ellohir’s blue eyes widened as he ran his finger along the faint line. Frodo laughed at the child’s awe. “Can you believe you were once tiny enough to come out of such a small space?”
“Did you cut into your tummy? Did you pull me out?” Ellohir’s eyes were bright with admiration, and Frodo hated to crush it.
“No, darling. Aragorn had to cut me and take you out.”
Ellohir’s smile faded suddenly. “Did it hurt?”
“I do not remember now. I suppose it must have hurt.”
Ellohir frowned, tugging at a loose thread in his nightshirt. “I’m sorry I hurt you.”
“No, Ellohir,” Frodo said, clasping Ellohir’s chin. “It was meant to hurt, and I would endure it all over again for you. Many wondrous things come out of the pain and sacrifice of others.”
“Like your missing finger?”
“Yes,” Frodo whispered, and a shadow passed before his eyes. Glancing at the calendar, he saw that it was October fifth. “Very much like that.”

Date: 2003-09-21 10:56 pm (UTC)It's good that someone's been telling Ellohir tales of Frodo's deeds, so that he understands when the shadows come.
