Aragorn had been harsh and short with the hobbits since Bree, but his conscience did not bother him. They were in trouble. The wraiths surrounded them, and in the dark, in the wilderness, if the Nine came upon them, a ranger and four sheltered hobbits would be no match.

“Thank you. For getting us this far.”

Aragorn looked down in surprise. Hobbits were quiet, even for a Ranger’s sharp ears. Frodo clutched himself, as if chilly.

“You should sleep.”

Instead they talked until sunrise. Frodo’s friendliness lifted Aragorn’s lonely heart, and Aragorn could see that his tales soothed Frodo’s fear.

Thank you! I love that scene in the extended FOTR, where Aragorn is singing and Frodo asks about it, but then Aragorn tells Frodo to go back to sleep and I'm always thinking, "nooo, get up, Frodo, and TALK to him!" :D
