Title: Ten Lords Leaping
Rating: G
Summary: In the Undying Lands there is a strange sport…
Written for a waymeet challenge...

Sam pushed open the gate with zest, almost tripping over a marble stone that lay just off the footpath that led to Frodo’s cottage by the sea.

“Come on, now, Mr. Frodo, we’ll be late!” Sam’s eager face, although crowned by silver curls, belied his ancient years. Frodo’s heart warmed to see him trot up the path with a tween-like spring to his feet.

Frodo sat on the stoop, bundled in his cloak, his breath coming out in gentle puffs. He gazed beyond the emerald cliff, where the sea twinkled pink and icy silver in the early morning. He stroked a frost-covered blade of grass between thumb and forefinger. “For what?”

“Have you forgotten the day?”

Frodo looked at Sam in bewilderment. “Apparently so. It is not my birthday. That is long since passed. Nor is it yours—”

“The northern plunge!” Sam was breathless with loving exasperation. “The first day of winter, when I hear tell there’s a tradition where ten brave Elvish lords will dare to leap from the cliff into the frigid sea.”

Frodo laughed. Oh how the years had blended together. It seemed like only yesterday, but he had indeed seen this spectacle before, perhaps in the first few years he had arrived in the Undying Lands, and it had then brought joy and laughter to a wounded heart.

Sam collapsed on the stoop beside Frodo. “Ten lords a’leaping! I wouldn’t miss it for anything.” He paused, smiling wistfully. “They always surprise me, Mr. Frodo. Just when you think they’re beyond any sort of nonsense, they go and do a thing like this!”

Frodo rose to his feet and offered Sam his arm. “Then let us go see. If Merry and Pippin were here, which one of them do you suppose would be fool enough to leap?”

Sam shook his head. “I don’t know sir, but I don’t think it’d be a matter of which -- but of which first.”

They then made their way out of the gate and down the road, following faint Elvish laughter that still, after all these years, sounded like bells to Frodo’s ears.

Oh, this is fun! You've really caught both their voices here. Sam's comeback at the end is just perfect. I love this.
