"A . . .kitten," Frodo gasped, before wincing with pain.

"He's delirious," Merry said, looking at Aragorn in pleading. "Can't you do something?"

"The poison is setting in fast," Aragorn said.

"Kittens," Frodo said again. This time his eyes were clear and filled with wonder.

Faint mews could be heard from all around them.

"My master's right," Sam said. "I see one -- just over there! An orange striped one, just like one my ma had once!"

Pippin rubbed his eyes and Merry's jaw dropped. Kittens poured into the dell at Weathertop.

"What fell trick has the enemy come up with now?" Aragorn asked, twisting around, his torch in hand. He nearly tripped over a tabby-striped kitten that weaved around his boots, mewing up at him, its green eyes glowing in the firelight.

Soon they were surrounded by kittens of all sorts and colors, all pouncing, purring, mewing. They could not cure Frodo of his wound, but they could make him forget the pain for a bit.

Meanwhile in Rivendell, Elrond shook his head in chagrin.

"You did what?" Arwen demanded.

"The word for kitten is awfully similar to the word for protection in the ancient wizard tongue, and once unleashed, I could not take it back."

Gandalf would never let him live this one down. Not in a million ages in Middle-earth. Or in the lands beyond.
