"Will you relax?" Pippin said in exasperation after Frodo startled at a noise and knocked a pitcher of cream from the table. Sam scurried to mop it up.

"No, no, I'll get it," Frodo said, flushing. "It's just, I thought I heard something outside."

"Your Ranger will come," Pippin said with a smirk. "But it's likely he'll wait until after dark, don't you think? The neighbors are already buzzing about the strange visitors to Bag End."

"In the evening when he's wrapped up in his cloak, they probably just think he's Gandalf," Merry offered, sipping his tea.

Frodo went to refill the cream, glad to have a moment alone. He took a few breaths, his heart fluttering. It had been nearly a year. Word had just come from Bree that Aragorn was on his way. Three days ago. That meant he could be here any moment. Merry was right, though. He should not expect him mid morning. He almost always slipped in under cover of darkness, after the squawking neighbors had all gone to bed. If Aragorn did not come this evening, Frodo did not know what he would do. He had already changed the bedding in the guest room that had the man-sized bed, already bought food to make a special meal, gotten out some Old Winyards wine. Together they would lie in bed, sipping wine, watching the moon rise, and after the wine was finished. . .Frodo smiled, gazing out the window.

He only hoped Aragorn had saved some energy for him.
