Frodo had promised himself that once Ellohir went to sleep that evening, he would tell Aragorn his secret.
This was easier said than done, as lately, getting Ellohir to bed had become the most arduous of tasks. One read-aloud turned into three. Then he required a glass of milk. Next Frodo had to tell him “just one” tale about the Shire, after which Aragorn must tuck him in.
On this particular evening, the bedtime ritual had drawn out into a full hour. By the time Ellohir had finally fallen into an exhausted slumber, both Frodo and Aragorn were spent.
They moved out onto the terrace where they could enjoy adult conversation, a balmy breeze, and a sky filled with stars.
“We must start getting Ellohir down to sleep earlier,” Aragorn said with a sigh.
“We’ve been far too indulgent,” Frodo nodded. Weariness seeped down his limbs, and his stomach twisted with nerves. Now that the time had come, he was reluctant to disturb the peace. He wished just to sit with his lover, to enjoy the beautiful night. But if not now, then when? He took a shuddering breath.
“Are you ill?” Aragorn asked.
Frodo startled. “No. Why?”
“You’ve not listened to a word I’ve said.”
Frodo flushed. “I am sorry. I must be more tired than I thought. Ellohir. He’s been a handful today.”
“Indeed,” Aragorn said, chuckling. “Perhaps he shall sleep late tomorrow.” He blew a smoke ring.
Frodo giggled. “Your skill is almost as good as Gandalf’s.”
Aragorn passed Frodo the pipe, but Frodo shook his head. The very scent of pipeweed made his stomach heave. Another sign that Koslorn the healer had not been mistaken.
Aragorn’s eyebrows shot up. “Where is the real Frodo Baggins that would never refuse a pipe and who is this hobbit sitting beside me?”
Frodo forced a smile, but he said nothing. His heart pounded.
There. Just tell him. It’s now or you won’t do it.
Aragorn grew serious. “Frodo, it’s clear something is bothering you. Your eyes are far too expressive to deceive me on this matter. Pray, tell. I shall be on my way to Rohan tomorrow and will not be back for weeks.”
“Rohan!” Frodo cried out in dismay. “You did not tell me. That road is full of danger these days. Please do not go.”
Aragorn sighed. “I am King. Of course I must go. I’ve survived far worse, and so have you. Something is the matter. What is it?”
Frodo clasped his hands together to still the trembling. “I’m. . .” He met Aragorn’s worried gaze. “I am with child.”
Aragorn let out a small gasp. He said nothing for several moments. Then his mouth twisted. “It cannot be. No.”
“It will be all right this time,” Frodo said. “I am much stronger now.”
Aragorn rose to his feet and stalked to the balustrade. “It is not all right. Do you know what Ellohir’s birth did to you?”
Frodo looked at Aragorn in misery. While he had kept his secret, his world had remained happy. Now everything would fall apart. “Of course I do.”
“Then you know this can not be.”
“Koslorn said it will arrive in September or October,” Frodo whispered.
Aragorn slammed his fist on the stone railing. “I will banish him from Gondor. He knows as well as I that another babe will be your death.”
“It is not his fault,” Frodo said, now flushed with anger. “And I’ve always wanted another, a companion for poor Ellohir. I am not frail or weak. You yourself said that we have both been through so much worse.”
Aragorn turned to face Frodo. “Ellohir has all he wants, all the love in the world. What use will any of it be if we lose you?”
“We will find a way to make this work. We are prepared this time. It will be all right.”
“I will delay my trip to Rohan.” Aragorn paced the terrace, his jaw shaking. “Tomorrow I will make an herbal concoction to rid your body of the babe. You can swallow it and I will stay with you until you recover.”
Frodo paled. “You will do no such thing!”
“You cannot have this baby.”
“That is not your choice,” Frodo said, fixing a smoldering glare on him. “I did not think you had it in you to be so cruel.”
Aragorn sat down beside Frodo again. “Help me then. Tell me how you think this shall work. Help me to understand.”
“I think we should not talk about this at all right now,” Frodo said, trembling with rage. “You are not in your right mind.”
Aragorn grasped Frodo’s chin in his hand. “Tell me.”
“Take your hand from me,” Frodo said, jerking away. “Just go. Go on to Rohan.”
Aragorn fell into a miserable silence. His eyes were moist with pain. “I am sorry,” he said. “Please forgive me. I had no right to speak to you so.” He took Frodo’s hand in his. Frodo scooted over to him and allowed Aragorn to put his arms fully around him. “I was just frightened.”
“I know.”
“We’ve had a life together, you and I, beyond our dreams,” Aragorn said. “There is nothing I could deny you. Nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”
“We have had many wonderful years together,” Frodo said. “But do not speak as if this is the end.”
Aragorn shook his head, still squeezing Frodo. “Gandalf once said, many years ago, the shadow is thwarted, and then it takes another shape and rises again. My fear for those I love can never fully be thwarted.”
“I feel it here,” Frodo said, patting his chest. “Ellohir needs a brother or sister. It will be all--”
Aragorn interrupted Frodo with a kiss.

Ellohir slept long and deeply that night. He dreamed about a chubby toddler with curly dark hair like his and gray eyes instead of blue. The babe toddled after him everywhere he went. He could not tell if it was a girl-child or a boy-child, but he felt a protective need to teach this babe everything about the sun and moon and stars and the whole wide world.

LMAO, that's it, Aragorn; that's the way to solve the problem! haha I can't believe Aragorn would consider aborting the child, though! T_T but if that baby comes in October . . . there could be serious consequences.
