Bilbo collapsed into Thorin’s hug, limp with delayed shock from all that had happened that day and of course, relief that Thorin was alive and well. In fact, he had barely taken note of his surroundings during the eagle flight, so heart-broken he had been that Thorin was dead. But Thorin’s armor had spared him the vicious warg bite, and while he had been knocked around by Azog, it seemed that dwarves were quite sturdy after all.

Bilbo himself was sore all over, and his shoulder, where Azog’s warg had bit him, throbbed.

Thorin squeezed him so hard that he could barely breathe, and gladly he yielded to that strength, pressing his cheek against Thorin’s rough one.

“In my dream you had perished,” Thorin whispered in his ear. “I’m so glad that was false. So glad. I would take back everything I said before.” And as he pulled away, his lips brushed Bilbo’s ear, sending Bilbo’s heart aflutter. Thorin’s hand lingered on Bilbo’s shoulder, and Bilbo’s cheeks warmed. How he had yearned for this, and now that it was happening, it seemed a dream come to life. Since the night Balin had told them about Thorin’s history with Azog, something had burned for Thorin in Bilbo’s heart. He had suddenly taken note of the steel-blue eyes that watched all and missed nothing. He had seen the deep love Thorin bore for his company and kin. Bilbo had longed to be worthy of that love and respect, but he could not seem to be anything but a pampered fool in Thorin’s eyes. Until now. Now those eyes looked at him in admiration and adoration, and it filled Bilbo with warmth and strength.

“Gwahir has allowed that tonight we sleep up here,” Gandalf said. “This may be the safest place we sleep on all our journey. Tomorrow we have a long, treacherous path down. And much peril lies still ahead.” He glanced toward the forest.

“What shall we have for dinner?” Bombur asked. He massaged his swollen foot. He had twisted it somewhere during all their running from goblins and wargs and orcs.

“I expect we’ll have whatever you packed that requires no fire,” Gandalf said.

“Can you not start us a fire?” Dori asked. “With your magic and all?”

Gandalf looked annoyed. “Even so, I would still need kindling for that.”

“So no fire,” Bofur groaned, looking around their stark stone perch.

“No kindling, no fire,” Kili said. An untreated cut gashed down his cheek, smeared with dry blood.

“What happened to your shoulder?” Gandalf asked Bilbo.

Bilbo glanced toward the pain. Blood and chewed up jacket revealed a nasty bite. “Oh, I suppose Azog’s warg got a bit too close, that’s all. I don’t think it’s that bad.”

“Come,” Thorin said with concern. “That should be treated. “Wargs are nasty creatures. There’s no telling what’s in its bite.”

“It is nothing,” Bilbo said, flushing. “And what of your injuries? We all thought—”

“Hush,” Thorin said. “I am all right, and I have no open wounds. Just a bit of a headache. Nothing a good night’s sleep will not solve.”

“I’ve a bit of something for our wounds,” Gandalf said, pulling out a flask. “It’s not much, but it will offer some relief.”

He tilted the flask so that a few drops dribbled out of the flask onto a clean cloth that he had whipped out from yet another pocket in his voluminous cloak.

“Allow me,” Thorin said, his gaze on Bilbo. “It’s the least I can do for one who saved my life.”

Bilbo flushed. “Oh, never mind, both of you. I’ll be all right.”

Gandalf handed Thorin the cloth with a half-smile that spoke of complete approval, and he left them to ask about the others’ wounds.

“Come,” Thorin said under his breath to Bilbo. “The sun is going down, and Bofur and Bifur will be on watch tonight. Let us go somewhere a bit. . .away from the crowd.”

Bilbo’s heart sped, and he nodded, breathless, hardly able to believe this new turn of events in which not only was Thorin attentive to him but seemed to like him. He had imagined his heart was doomed for disappointment until one or both of them came to a nasty end on this adventure, most likely sooner rather than later.

Thorin led Bilbo down a rocky series of steps to another ledge, still dizzyingly high above the world, but safe and far enough away from the others that even their chatter and laughter seemed far away.

Thorin took off his fur cloak and lay it down on the rocks.

“There now, Master Baggins, sit,” he commanded.

“But your cloak,” Bilbo said. “You’ll be frozen—”

Thorin grasped Bilbo by the upper arm and forced him to sit upon the cloak, gently yet firm enough that there could be no resistance. His hand was strong and callused from wielding ax and sword. He doubted Thorin knew his own strength.

“There now,” Thorin said, kneeling beside him. “Take off your jacket and shirt.”

“My shirt?” Bilbo shook his head. “Oh, no, that’s not necessary.”

“I cannot treat your wound if I cannot see it. Will you do it or shall I?”

Bilbo swallowed. “You are certainly commanding today.” He took off his jacket and folded it neatly beside him. He then unbuttoned his torn shirt halfway so that there was just enough give for him to push his left sleeve off his shoulder, revealing the wound.

Thorin smiled. “Bilbo Baggins, you are a singular fellow, one whom I am—” He stopped suddenly, frowning. “That is a nasty bite indeed. It is well we’ve Gandalf with us.” He rubbed the damp cloth over the wound with rare gentleness. Bilbo gasped with pain, but very soon the pain faded, as whatever had been in Gandalf’s flask seeped deep in the wound.

“There, does that feel better?” Thorin asked.

Bilbo nodded. “Oh, that’s very nice. And you’ve a fine touch, Thorin Oakenshield.”

“I do, do I?” Thorin smiled, and his gaze pierced deep into Bilbo’s heart. “Let us see about that.”

The sun had completely gone down. Bilbo started to button up his shirt again, but Thorin grasped his hands, stopping him. When Bilbo looked up, Thorin leaned in and captured his lips in his, kissing with hungry need. Bilbo grasped blindly toward him, but he felt only the armor over his heart.

He struggled to breathe and Thorin pulled back.

“Do you not want this?” Thorin asked.

“Oh, I do,” Bilbo said, breathing hard. “I do. You have no idea. But I’ve never –”

“I’ll be gentle,” Thorin said, leaning in again. “I’ve wanted you since I saw you at Bag End.”

Bilbo scooted back, away. “Wait!”

Thorin sighed, but smiled. “You’re ever the same.”

“Let us lie down together,” Bilbo said.

“That could lead to dangerous things,” Thorin said in a near growl.

“I am aware of danger by now, having followed you a good deal away from my Shire.”

Thorin laughed. “This is why you’ve captured my heart.”

“Have I?”

Thorin lay beside Bilbo. He touched the bare skin of Bilbo’s chest. “So soft. It bothers me that you wear no armor.”

“And I shall not,” Bilbo said, lifting his chin. “I am no fighter.”

“Humph,” Thorin said. “I would have you live to see Erebor reclaimed.” He unbuttoned the remainder of Bilbo’s buttons.

“I did not think I’d make it even through today,” Bilbo said, breathing harder and shivering with each of Thorin’s touches. “And that would have been a shame.”

Thorin kissed Bilbo’s neck. “I’ll have you if you will have me.”

“Take me, then,” Bilbo said. “Yes, I am ready.”

Thorin delved deep, far deeper than ever he had in Erebor, and the gold was richer and sweeter, and far more satisfying, and after they were done, they lay tangled in Thorin’s fur cloak, sticky and warm, exhausted, clutching each other. The moonlight offered faint silver light, and the distant forest was darker than the night sky.

WOW! I just love yur story! It is beautifully written and I enjoyed every minute of reading it.

By the way, are going to write another chapter for "Arranged Marriage" in the near future? It is one of my favourite stories and it would b a shame to leave it unfinished. :)

Thorin's opinion of Bilbo changed drastically, but then Bilbo himself underwent quite a change during the first part of the quest. The pairing is unlikely, but I can see them becoming very close after the dangers they'd shared. I really liked Thorin putting down his cloak for Bilbo.

If I had an icon of people applauding, I would use it.

Well done. I like how you didn't do a graphic description of the sex, since it wouldn't exactly fit with how the rest of the story feels. But the line, "Thorin delved deep, far deeper than ever he had in Erebor, and the gold was richer and sweeter, and far more satisfying," was so erotic, and said plenty.

I like it when you get your writing mojo back. :D

Ah, I enjoyed this! Very hot, and I really loved Thorin's concern over Bilbo. And his STERNNESS!

I guess I'm a serious sucker for stern. :D

On a side note, I can't even BELIEVE sometimes that I'm reading dwarf slash. I really can't. Who would ever have thought that?

Thank you!!! :)) Yes, Thorin is VERY STERN. Not quite as stern as certain rangers, but still, VERY STERN.

:)))

Yes, the dwarf slash thing is a little surreal! I remember back in the day being kind of shocked by how much Legolas/Gimli slash was out there, but now I guess, nothing surprises me. There was a Bilbo mpreg I was reading, too, and it promises to be somewhat angsty, I think! :D

Really, really enjoyed this. Thorin taking care of Bilbo, and putting down his fur cloak for Bilbo to lie ( lay? ) down on, I like that a lot!
