For Shirebound...:)
Oct. 5th, 2013 07:43 pmFor
shirebound's birthday a few years ago, I wrote a story about Pippin and Helo finding a portal to Middle-earth:
Pippin and Helo's Excellent Adventure"
Tonight, just now, I whipped up a bit of a sequel....:)) Dear friend, I hope you'll find it sweet and comforting!
Pippin was worried. Shirebound would be home soon. Which meant walkies. Pippin sighed, placing her chin between her paws. She had always loved her walkies and she loved Shirebound more than anything in the world, and she especially loved cuddling with Shirebound on the bed's blanket, but walkies just weren't the same these days. Walkies should be filled with adventure and finding treasures under leaves and golden sunshine and love from Shirebound, not snarling monsters that leapt out of nowhere and shadowed the sun.
Pippin perked up. She had an idea. She hadn't seen Helo in a good long while. It was about time to make another trip. She jumped on the couch and pawed her message on the cushion, wondering if her claws sounded desperate. She heard a faint tap, tap, tap from far away and a gentle Helo meow.
Pippin whirled down the hole, whirling and spinning until she landed into. . .the most cozy room she had ever seen. Round and warm, with a fire crackling in the fireplace, everything about it felt like home. Well, Pippin thought, it was not quite home because it wasn't Shirebound's house with treats and cuddles and beds, but it was very close. Hobbit friend Frodo sat in an armchair in front of the fire, a book open on his lap. He was not reading, however, but rather staring forward into the fire. He rubbed his left shoulder and winced as if in pain. With his other hand he clasped something around his neck.
"The shadow will never leave," he whispered.
Yes, Pippin thought with desperate understanding.
Helo, who had arrived just before Pippin, arched his back and yawned.
When he saw Pippin, he pounced toward her, sniffing her all over. "I'm so glad you're okay, Pippin," Helo purred. "Claudia told me what happened. If I had been there, I would have swatted that other dog's nose! I never would have let him hurt my friend." He kissed Pippin on her wet nose.
"Speaking of hurt," Pippin said in a soft voice, glancing toward Frodo.
Helo looked sober. "This is a difficult day for him, Pippin."
"October 6th. What should we do?"
Helo led the way to the armchair and leaped into Frodo's lap. Frodo looked surprised at first, but he seemed to come back to himself just a bit. He petted Helo with a half smile and Helo purred and kneaded Frodo's legs. Pippin joined him. She looked into Frodo's haunted eyes and saw reflected in them snarling monsters and shadows.
"He went on a long walkie, didn't he?" he whispered to Helo. "And he had those who protected him until the end, didn't he?"
"Yes," Helo said, "Like Shirebound did for you. And those men. You are never alone, Pippin. You are surrounded by those that would banish the shadows." He rubbed his head against Pippin's before looking up at Frodo in adoration and purring.
Frodo pet Helo under his chin and cuddled Pippin to him, and as Pippin saw the shadows lessen in Frodo's eyes, strength and courage began to return to her.
Helo and Pippin remained with Frodo, staying with him through that whole dark night, giving him warmth where there had been only chill before.
When Pippin returned to San Diego, only a few minutes had passed there, for that was the way with portals to Middle-earth. Shirebound returned soon after and said, "Walkies?"
Pippin ran to her, head held high, ready to face walkies again, knowing only that she was surrounded by love and light.

See, that line alone makes me sniffle with fondness. What a lovely story to make Pip Pup feel not afraid anymore of her beloved walkies.
